Sheffield City of Culture 2013

The first meeting of the bid for Sheffield as the City of Culture 2009 was held at the Millenium Gallery on Monday 23 rd November 2009.
The was well supported by many organisations both private and commercial as well as individuels such as ourselves all of whom were there with the same aim of wanting to make it happen.
As to be expected this was to outine the aspects of the bid and gain imput from the organisations as to where it was felt it should go.
Obviously many ideas were submitted and outlines provided and it hoped that these will be taken on board, after all its not much point asking for ideas and direction from the people who are going to make it happen, namely the public if its just ignored, however this is a defeatist attitude and has no place in the enthusiasum of those present which from the turn out and flow of information will not happen, so having got all negitivity out of the way we await the result of the initial shortlist expected in December.
We will let you know when we know, in the meantime post your comments either here or on the sheffield website (details when its up and running)

Full Moon and other stories featuring Foster and Hawkins with Hallam students at the Cream Gallery, Sheffield.

The reviewer attended the preview of this exhibition which was in fact a combination of an exhibition of Art and Artification by Foster and Hawkins and work by 2nd year degree students in Furniture & Design at Hallam University.
As to be expected it was packed, mainly with students attempting to bolster the economy by reducing the European wine lake, (sorry guys you failed miserably but well done for trying).
Due to restrictions on space the full impact of the work produced could not be fully realised but no matter, the quality and design bodes good for the future of next years final exhibition, the main thing is getting out there and letting the public have a taster of things to come, so credit to those who took part, although a little bird told me that one of the exhibitors was so eleventh hour in bringing their work it was nearer to closing time. (Earls Court, March 2010 do you)
The floor space having been taken with the students it was up to the masters to fill the wall space which Foster and Hawkins did with a vengeance packing it with artwork.
Hawkins produced his inimitable style of protest and irony through the use of pictorial statements overlain with subtle messages and symbolism, cocking a snook at the established order of things, (Careful Scott, come the revolution you'll be joining the rest of us as being the first to the wall)
Mick Foster! What can I say? I came expecting to find the art world rent apart with another exhibition of deeply emotional renditions, savagely executed in a display of raw energy, but found a mild version which although well executed did not say anything to the reviewer in terms of pure symbolism and power.
Perhaps having seen previous work we had too high expectations although in fairness Foster did state that the current work was part experimental and looking at things in a different direction and that is something we cannot argue with, if art does not look at things differently how do we know if it works.
The exhibition runs from the 13th November to 9th December 2009 at the Cream Gallery, Broomhill, Sheffield.

Les in London

Once again Les has had artwork accepted for exhibition in London representing not only himself and the 'Coterie' but other artists in the north to demonstrate that art and culture does exist beyond the M25.
This is your chance to show your support and acknowledgment of this fact, and of Les himself by registering your vote for him on www.eacartawards.org.uk it will only take a minute of your time which is a fraction of the time Les has taken in promoting art in the North in general and Sheffield in particular.
Such is the magnanimity of our Les that he has issued an invition to a private viewing at the Bank Side Gallery between 3pm-5pm on Tuesday 1st December 2009 but please RSVP the gallery.
The exhibition runs from the 2nd to 6th December 2009 and for those of you who do not know the gallery, it is situated on the South Bank, 200 yards from Tate Modern, so 2 exhibitions near to each other with free entry, how cool is that? almost as good as the 'Coterie'

REMEMBER use your vote and post your comments.
